During 'The People's House Exhibit' on Friday, US President Donald Trump remarked that facilitating a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin is as challenging as mixing oil and vinegar.
This analogy highlights the stark differences between the two leaders, much like the contrasting properties of oil, which repels water, and vinegar, which attracts it. Trump conveyed his hope for collaboration between the two leaders to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has tragically resulted in an estimated 7,000 fatalities weekly, primarily among soldiers.
In a press interaction, Trump stated, 'We will see if Putin and Zelenskyy can find common ground. It’s a bit like oil and vinegar; they don’t naturally get along for clear reasons. However, we will observe the situation. Ideally, I wouldn’t need to be involved, but they continue to engage in combat, leading to unnecessary loss of life, which is foolish given the current toll of 7,000 lives lost weekly.'
Trump has expressed his readiness to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, claiming he has successfully halted seven wars in the past and is committed to resolving this conflict. 'I want to see if we can bring this to an end. I initially thought this would be a moderately challenging situation, but it has proven to be the most complex,' he added.
He criticized both parties for their lack of sincerity and willingness to negotiate, noting that Putin has raised doubts about Zelenskyy’s credibility as a leader. Trump warned that if a resolution is not reached and he perceives Russia as the aggressor, he would impose secondary sanctions on Russia, potentially including tariffs of 25-50% on Russian oil.
Putin has indicated a willingness to meet with Zelenskyy to discuss a potential resolution to the conflict, contingent upon having a structured agenda for the meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that there is currently no agenda for a summit between the two leaders and that no plans exist for such a meeting. Lavrov emphasized that while Putin is open to discussions, a proper agenda is essential, which is currently absent. Both Russia and Ukraine are attempting to demonstrate to President Trump their readiness to negotiate a peace deal, despite mutual accusations of insincerity in their negotiations.
